Breaking news! No Art Journal Circle this month

December has been crazy-busy for me, and for everyone else too - we had cancellations for the Art Journal group, and Treasured Memories called me and suggested we cancel it for the month.   It took me by surprise and I agreed, altho now I regret it -- we had a lot of walk-ins last month.  I hope we don't get people showing up and being disappointed!   Anyway, next month sign-up ahead of time, the store likes to see that.

I haven't gotten much done, what with holiday decorating, gift shopping and all - here's a recent journal page....
it's shiny gold pen and Faber-Castell metallic gel sticks on black gesso.   I bought a small set of 6 gel sticks to try them out, and am kinda "meh" on them.    The scan doesn't pick up that they are very shimmery and pretty, BUT they are big fat sticks with no point, like a dull crayon, so are hard to be at all precise with.

Hope you are taking some time to be creative during the holiday bustle!

Art Journal Circle this Sunday!

We'll be meeting Sunday 2-4 at Treasured Memories for our second Art Journal Circle; Smash Book and Beyond (info behind the link).  I'll have tips and tricks to jazz up and love your handwriting - it's so great to see people's real handwriting on their work, and far too many people dislike their own writing!  We'll cure that, work on a quote and play around in our journals.

I went to a fun class yesterday taught by Kelly Kilmer;  her art journals are gorgeous and collage-y and unique.

Here's the pages our hostess was working on in class:

...the one on the table is mine, but I didn't get too far along.  I'll post more when I get some more done.  I took more photos, but sadly they didn't turn out well.   Check out Kelly's blog for classes, she teaches all over L.A. and has great tips on art supplies, etc.

Hope to see some of you Sunday!

Rainy day Smash Book

It was a grey wet day yesterday, so I sat on my bed and doodled up some color in my Smash Book -

I tend to work small, so I like to challenge myself to work L-A-R-G-E - this was done fast and free-hand, just for fun; colored in with Sakura glaze pens and some Neo-color 2 around the edges.   The map page under it I gesso'd a bit to tone it down.  Oh, and some cute tiny Basic Grey yo-yo's on the I's.

I like how we keep growing and changing and finding new pursuits as we age, so this is a little shout-out to that.  Art journaling is my fave way of pushing my creative boundaries and having fun too!

Better!

Stuck some nice ribbon over that slogan-overload Smash book page, and I like it much more ~

still not my fave page, but happy enough.   Hope you have some time to do something fun and creative this week-end!

Christmas tags - soooo easy

I had a blast with my girlfriends making Christmas tags - just a short morning of crafting and we each had a few tags to add to a bottle of wine or a plant (and still time left over to play cards, yay).    Here's mine:
Some Distress ink, an embossed stamp, and then a Staz-on stamped image; the sparkle isn't scanning well, but all the tags have a spritz of frosty glitter all over

Same thing but used a Tim Holtz metal bit with some Ranger ink on to color it blue - those lacey snowflake stamps are Martha Stewart

This one was for my daughter, she loves the cute animals - they are just little die-cuts from Michaels, and a bit of Stickles around the edge.

Crafting with friends is so much fun - invite some friends over and make a little something!  Have a great week-end  =)

Our first Art Journal Circle!

I loved our fist Art Journal Circle meeting Sunday - I think everyone else had fun too!   It looked like it - there was a lot of chatting and working away in Smash Books.    And now everyone has at least a first page started; maybe that page will get finished and another begun!

I suggested doing a page that you were "meh" about, and personally chose this one:   I had trouble getting going with the birds, but once I started pasting stuff down it all flowed.

(you can always click pics to enlarge)

How did I end up with three (three!!) sayings on one spread?!   Tomorrow I'm going to cover up the bottom left one - the page needs a little texture anyway.   Three quotes is a little too Stuart Smalley for me.

I'm hoping to see lots of people back next month, and maybe they will bring new pages to ooh and ahh over - but if not, that's okay too.  Sometimes you have to hold the fire to the kindling a few times before the spark takes hold!

Art Journal + Sewing!

Ohmigosh, I'm so pleased with how this came out!   My tired old first art journal needed some love - specifically, a cover.   Check it out now -

Yay!   That's a vintage tatted doily-thing under a Prima flower, and yes, I beaded that lace one tiny bead a at time (it's more fun than it seems).  Close up -

Here's the back...

All the fabric is the Amy Butler collection "Love".   Those colors together just make my heart sing.

I'm very exited to host the first Art Journal Circle at Treasured Memories tomorrow - come on by if you live in the Los Angeles area!

Awesome Classes with Jane LaFazio

I did a couple classes last week-end with the wonderfully talented Jane LaFazio; if you get the chance, definitely attend one!  She is funny and down-to-earth, and made everyone feel like amazing artists.

The first class was collage - here's Jane showing us some marvelous examples of her work

The second class was watercolor for mixed-media journaling; here's the first work the class did

I know, right!  So fun!  Mine is the little rose in the center.

The venue was nice, it's a yearly convention called Learning and Product Expo:Art in Pasadena - they have classes in oils, sculpture, you-name-it.   And a great vendor hall, where I may have gotten a bunch of encaustic stuff, despite swearing I would NEVER do encaustic again (it was so cheap tho!)  Oooo and great prices on Copic markers, couldn't pass that up either.

Hope you all had a fun and creative Halloween week-end!

Sentimental Smash

This is a goofy little list of things I'm grateful for - the Smash book image of dice reminded me of how lucky I am.

So many wonderful things in this life - One thing is certain, and I have always known it-the joys of my life have nothing to do with age.  They do not change.  Flowers, the morning and evening light, music, poetry, silence, the goldfinches darting about..."

More Smash Book-ing

Here's a couple more pages I did in my Smash book:

...some super-cool lighting fixtures...

...and a little journaling about losing and finding creative juice (humm, I colored that stamp in, guess I forgot to re-scan it).

Free Christmas artwork

Rhonna Designs is offering free Christmas artwork!  Perfect for cards or in your art journal.  I love her work, and she is so generous about giving away little freebies.   Check it out:
